August 30th, 1877
The church bell tolled loudly as all of Colorado Springs came out to attend church there was a slight chill in the air as the last days of summer were drawing to a close….
The reverend waited outside the door of the church to greet the towns people as they walked up the steps into the church the Reverend feeling quite pleased as he thought of today's sermon.
"Good Morning!" The Reverend's voice boomed from behind the pulpit his hands resting on bible that lay before him.
The Reverend's smile turned into a look of deep thought as he began to speak.
"I have been thinking much this past week at the coming changes in the season, I noted the leaves have began to slightly turn from a lustrous green to a light shaded green with the tips beginning to lightly brown. I to have taken notice of the changes in our town, in the people the attitudes that the coming change of season bring. It's funny when you stop to think about how much change happens and yet most of it we don't ever realize or stop to take notice of."
The Reverend stepped from behind the pulpit and stood in front of the church casting his gaze over his congregation, taken note of the nodding of heads and the small smiles that gave me the knowing that there were some whom actually listened deeply to the words he spoke.
These changes are like the changes we have when we open our hearts to the lord, when we let him into our lives to guide us, to make us stronger and better people than before. The lord's love changes us and though we may not see it at first over time we will if we open ourselves to the lord's calling we will truly start to see the change in us as good to the point we won't recognize our old selves.
"Now I know what most of you are thinking not all change is good and even for some of you the thought of the changing season of summer into fall, then winter isn't noted as a good change but let me reassure you that it is. Take a moment to reflect on this what if there was no change of season? What if it stayed summer, or winter, or fall? with no change what might that be like? We would miss out on the beauty and wonder that's beheld in the other seasons. We wouldn't see the beauty of the changing leaves to the beautiful rusty orange, or see the beauty of snow freshly fallen on the ground. All change is good weather or not we know it at first, it may seem that some change isn't good but know that in change of all things god has a purpose, as with the change that god makes in our lives each and every day. Let this change of season bring about a change in our hearts and in our minds as we embrace the continued change that god's love brings us. Let us rejoice in the lord's love and praise him now and always for the changes his love brings us to become better people the changes we need to live our lives as god wants us to. Now let us stand and sing and praise god in song for the wonderful changes he will make in our lives."
After leading the congregation in song the Reverend again went again to stand behind the pulpit.
"I would like to now take time to note some of the changes in our town and also the changes in the lives of some of our friends. First off congratulations go out to those couples expecting the joyous birth of a child."
The Reverends eyes shifting from Jake and Treasa to Robert E. and Grace.
The Reverend's smile again faded as he spoke again this time in a more somber tone.
"I would now like to take a moment in silence as we remember loved ones recently lost."
The Reverend's gaze fell to Dr. Mike and Sully as his words trailed off, he could still see the pain of loss in Dr. Mike's eyes of the loss of her mother Elizabeth Quinn. Taking notice of the room the mood has shifted each had someone in this moment to remember.
After the moment of rest The Reverend continued with his announcements, "I would now like us to welcome a new family to our town and church would you all be so kind as to welcome The Smith's to our church and town and I would like to ask each of you to make them feel welcome. And last but not least I would like everyone to welcome Mrs. Charlotte Quessy and her son Carl to our congregation. Mrs. Quessy will be our new school teacher I am sure everyone will also make them feel welcome. I would like to take this time to urge all parents to stay on after church and introduce yourselves to Mrs. Quessy please let us all give her and her son a warm welcome to Colorado Springs."
After making the last of the announcements the Reverend returned to the pulpit one last time.
That concludes services for this Sunday, I look forward to seeing you all again next Sunday until then be safe and God Bless.
While some people stand up for lef the church, Charlotte, following by Carl, walked near the Reverend to the door.
"You did an awesome speak Reverend. The words come so well that people should really appreciate their Sunday morning." Charlotte said softly.
The Reverend noticed Horace stepped behind the woman. Horace clearing his troat and Charlotte turned back for see him, standing there with an hand around Samantha shoulder.
"Mrs. Quessy, let me introduce you Horace Bing. He is our telegraph and work at the post office." The reverend said.
"Nice to meet you Mr. Bing." she said while tending her hand to him.
"And who is this sweet girl behind you?" she asked while smiling to Sam.
Horace smiled nervously. "T-That's my daughter, Samantha. She will be your student." he completed on a proudly note in his voice.
Charlotte greeted the young girl with a warm smile. "I'm happy to meet your Samantha."
Sam smiled to Charlotte before turn her glance on Carl, who reddens in reply to her glance.
"You can call me Sam! What is your's?" she said to the boy.
"Carl." he replied, while remember saw her in the morning at the boarding house, but didn't talked to her before.
"I have to go to the office for compelte some works." Horace said quickly. "I'm sure Samantha will be happy to show the town to your son before the lunch, Sam?" while tapping softly on her shoulder.
"Why not, that could be funny." Sam said while waiting for Charlotte's approval.
"I don't have anything against this idea, what do you think Carl?"
The young boy nodded with a huge smile.
"We will return to the house for the lunch." Sam said while took Carl hand before stepped outside of the church.
Charlotte smiled to herself, happy that Carl seem to have a new friend after all their rought period they had.
