September 2th 1871
(The time was 9:55 am and Preston unlocked the door to the bank. When he opened the door, he found to his big surprise, a young boy standing right outside with a serious expression planted on his face)
Preston: Shouldn’t you be in school by now?
Oliver: I don’t go to school yet.
Preston: Alright, well something I can do for you?
Oliver: Yes…
Preston: And that is?
Oliver: I want a job.
(Preston was amused by the boy, with the thought of him not going to school yet and already he wanted a job. He glanced around to see if this was some sort of joke and then looked back at Oliver)
Preston: Listen I don’t hire children, so you best be running along now.
Oliver: You don’t have to pay me much, and I’ll work twice as fast as a grown-up.
Preston: Sorry, not interested.
(Oliver thought a second to what he should say next)
Oliver: What if the first week, I don’t have to get paid.
Preston: You don’t give up that easy do you?
Oliver: No sir and I am Oliver O'Neill.
Preston: O'Neill?
Oliver: I thought you’d want to know the name of your employer.
(Preston’s mind was for a second on a former employer, but he then quickly replied Oliver with a smile)
Preston: Alright, you’ve convinced me, but what I’m about to offer you is not a real job, you keep that in mind.
Oliver: But I’ll get paid right?
(Preston thought to himself that he should never have let the boy talk him into this, but there was something about him that Preston found extraordinary. He was so young, but already his mind was fare advanced and to the likes of Preston’s own knowledge)
Preston: You’ll receive what’s rightful for your service. Now, how familiar are you with cleaning windows?
Oliver: I haven’t really done something like that before, but I’m sure I’ll manage.
Preston: I’m sure you will.
Oliver: When can I start?
(A young man approached with glasses and traveling cloth, seeming nervous)
Malvin: Excuse me?
Preston: Yes, may I help you?
(Malvin looked closely at Preston and observed that he was likely standing before the man he was seeking)
Malvin: Well, that is, are you Preston Lodge? I saw the ad in the Denver paper.
Preston: Ah yes, Malvin Gormley is it?
Malvin: Yes sir, I just arrived from the train station.
(Preston smiled, then glanced back towards Oliver)
Preston: Listen, if you come back in about an hour, then you’ll be able to start with your new duties.
(He then looked at Malvin, while Oliver began to walk away happy of his result)
Preston: Well, let’s go inside shall we, I’ve heard you’ve attended Denver college?
Malvin: That’s correct.
Preston: Excellent. I’m sure you qualify for the job - If you follow me.
(Preston and Malvin entered the bank)
****
Note: Gormley was hired after his meeting with Mr. Lodge, but he first began his training two months later.
Unfortunately a bank robbery occurred the same day of his training. Thankfully no one was harmed, except the current sheriff Matthew Cooper, who survived with a miracle having suffered from a gunshot wound. Gormley was trained a week later and three weeks after, Oliver spent almost two hours cleaning windows, so that the bank could sparkle, because Preston’s father was to arrive in town.
